On Sunday October
9, 1949, a park attendant at Los Angeles' Griffith Park found a
black purse with its straps broken; inside was a curious note:
"Kirk: Can't wait any longer. Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work
best this way while mother is away."
There was also a Screen Extras Guild ID in the purse, in the name of
Jean Spangler. The park attendant called LAPD, who had received, but
dismissed, a missing person report on Miss Spangler only a day
earlier.
Fearing at first she had been a victim of the Black Dahlia-killer,
police immediately began looking for "Kirk" and "Dr. Scott", and any
witnesses who may have seen Jean since she left home on Friday
night. Friends, family and colleagues were interviewed, and large
parts of the massive Griffith Park were searched by police and
volunteers for any trace of the beautiful missing show girl and
movie extra.
She was never found.
